Hereon at the German Unity Day 2023

Under the motto "Open Horizons", the celebrations for the Day of German Unity took place in Hamburg.

Several hundred thousand visitors came to the Hanseatic city to take part in the citizens' festival and the entire Hamburg city center was transformed into a stage of art, culture and politics. The Hereon participated again this year and had not one but two stands:

Not far from Hamburg's main train station at the beginning of the Ländermeile, visitors passed the stand of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Here we presented research on our coasts and seas in close cooperation with GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research and with Kiel Marine Science (KMS), the Center for Interdisciplinary Marine Science at Christian Albrechts University (CAU).

There was much to discover in the exhibition, from the effects of overfishing in the ocean, trash in the ocean and ammunition remains recovered from the sea, to research on land use conflicts on the North Sea coast, to measuring devices for ocean observation and remote sensing. The informative exhibition cube was an eye-catcher and attracted numerous visitors. In addition, Hamburg's First Mayor Dr. Peter Tschentscher, Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther and Dirk Schrödter, Head of the State Chancellery in Schleswig-Holstein, visited the cube on their tours.

Anyone passing along the Binnenalster on Ballindamm found the second Hereon stand right next to the tent of Hamburg's scientific institutions. The Institute for Material and Process Design and the Institute for Materials Mechanics presented their work on lightweight construction in vehicles and aircraft. The car model with magnesium components stood out in particular, attracting many interested people.
