Neutron scattering

Future materials innovation requires a profound understanding of materials properties as well as of the manufacturing and ageing processes. The “Neutron Scattering” department operates several experimental stations at MLZ in Garching, where neutrons can be used to analyze a wide variety of materials—ranging from the interaction of individual atoms to a macroscopic component. For example, this makes it possible to understand the subtle ageing processes in a material or to observe how hydrogen behaves in novel storage materials. This is an important contribution toward developing renewable energy technologies for a decarbonized industry.
