Polymer Technology

For later industrial use, it is necessary to produce customized polymers in large quantities. The “Polymer Technology” department studies the upscaling of different polymerization processes to produce polymers and composites for various applications, such as membrane-based separations or hydrogen storage. We consider classical methods, such as anionic polymerization, but also more environmentally friendly methods, such as what is known as RAFT emulsion polymerization. In doing so, we follow the concept of sustainable polymer synthesis through efficient resource management and intelligent process optimization. Our activities are supported by computer simulations and inline analysis methods as well as by the development of databases that comprise the synthesis parameters and properties of polymers. In addition, the department deals with the processing (compression molding, extrusion, foaming) of nanostructured materials as well as with investigations of their mechanical properties.
