Career, even with family

The Hereon was awarded for the sixth time for the compatibility of family and career

At the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, family and career are compatible. During the 25th certificate award ceremony on June 13, 2023, the board of trustees of berufundfamilie Service GmbH awarded the certificate granted for the audit berufundfamilie or audit familiengerechte hochschule. This is the sixth time that the Hereon has received the quality seal. With its human resources policy, it has not only reached a high level of maturity in terms of work-life balance but has also achieved the goals from the 2020 to 2022 action program.

The child is sick and has to be picked up from school. A paper has to be finished, the trip to the daycare center is delayed. Because of childcare times or care work, employees want to work flexibly or from home. Whether at a research center or in the private sector - work has to adapt to the needs of families. In the race for the best minds, the compatibility of work and family plays a decisive role.

Hereon offers a wide range of childcare options, company health management, free employee counseling and opportunities for further training. In addition, flexible working hours and expanded opportunities for mobile working. For example, as of the end of 2022, 63 percent of the total workforce at Hereon work part of their working hours independently of location.

This development will be further promoted by the new target agreement as part of the current audit. As part of the dialog process, at the end of January 2023 members of the Works Council, the Equal Opportunity Officer and Hereon employees with and without management responsibility were involved in drawing up an action program for the next three years. Within this framework, internal communication is to be further promoted, as is the role of managers, and cohesion and exchange are to be strengthened. In addition, the aim is to strengthen mobile working as a part of "New Work". New Work refers to modern working conditions with a high degree of flexibility.

51 companies, 44 institutions and 10 universities are currently entitled to use the seal of quality for a family- and life-phase-conscious HR policy. The Board of Trustees of berufundfamilie Service GmbH awards the certificates for the audit berufundfamilie or audit familiengerechte hochschule, initiated by the non-profit Hertie Foundation. It is made up of independent representatives from business, science, politics, and associations.

The 105 lucky organizations - more than 1900 employers have been honored since 1998 - are proud to belong to this circle for the next three years. Federal Family Minister and patron Lisa Paus also attended the anniversary ceremony in Berlin on June 13. The certificate is proof that the employers have successfully completed the auditing and dialog process and are committed to a strategic process. During the three-year period, the benchmarks for commitment are the individually drawn up target agreements or action programs. Implementation is reviewed by berufundfamilie Service GmbH.
