About 130 participants were expected to attend the 3rd Baltic Earth Conference on the Hel peninsula in Poland last week, but then the Corona virus hit, and we had to relocate the conference to the internet. On 2 and 3 June, participants from the whole Baltic Sea region (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland and Germany) came together to exchange scientific presentations and discussions.

35 oral presentations from the whole scientific spectrum of Baltic Earth were given, supplemented by 35 pdf posters which were available in a virtual poster hall. The online format proved to be a feasible alternative to the real conference, also with as many as 80 participants.

The conference was organized by the International Baltic Earth Secretariat at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG). The secretariat which has existed at HZG since 1994 (until 2013 as BALTEX Secretariat) fosters scientific Earth system research, exchange and outreach in the Baltic Sea region. We have organized 12 large international conferences, numerous workshops and summer schools, as well as large publication projects.
