30 months

General Information
Efforts and investments to develop green hydrogen (H2) technologies are steadily increasing, but the challenge of providing safe and cost-effective storage and transportation systems for H2 on a large scale remains. One of the options being considered is in the form of pressurized gas in tanks and pipelines. The great advantage of these methods is that existing infrastructure for natural gas transport and storage could be exploited if some modifications are made to the existing infrastructure to adapt it to the characteristics of H2. The technology developed in this project aims to provide the necessary screening tools for martial selection. The project will develop tools for testing and inspecting hydrogen storage and distribution component materials, together with a software for predicting failure time and damage that can lead to specific infrastructure defects, as well as methods for rapidly validating new materials (HSS, coated steels). Moreover, a graph-based data management system will be created. All of this will support the establishment of a safe and efficient European hydrogen storage, supply and distribution infrastructure.

The Hereon team will implement the model to track the evolution of hydrogen concentration profiles and stress profiles in the sample during loading. A phase field model which couples elasto-plasticity, damage mechanics and diffusion mechanics will provide the initiation of cracks in the sample due to critical accumulation of hydrogen in regions of high stresses. Moreover, the high-fidelity model developed by Hereon will used to generate data for the development of a surrogate model to be used in the decision-making process of the hydrogen embrittlement testing machine.
