Data and Scenarios for a Sustainable Mediterranean Blue Economy

MEDSEAPLAN

Project timeline
Start:
July 2024
Duration:
36 months
End:
June 2027
General Information
MEDSEAPLAN will strengthen the Blue Economy of the Mediterranean region by implementing an Ecosystem Approach (EA), a strategic concept based in a coupled social and ecological systems view, which is used to plan and manage offshore energy production. MEDSEAPLAN will serve the existing and future data needs of regional maritime spatial planning (MSP), generating relevant data inputs and converting data into information useful to MSP planners.

In MEDSEAPLAN, Hereon will develop a cost-effective observational buoy to acquire oceanographic and biogeochemical data throughout the water column. This buoy will house a set of sensor-equipped probes which are raised and lowered through the water column by a winch, generating quasi-continuous vertical profiles. The measurement concept and the parameters to be obtained will be adapted to record and monitor the conditions in the Marmara Sea. Furthermore, the buoy will collect meteorological measurements of wind, air pressure and air temperature near to the sea surface (3 m height). In collaboration with the local project partners the buoy will be deployed at a pilot site in the Marmara Sea within the second year of the project. The measurements will be distributed in real time among project partners, and are primarily intended to monitor anthropogenic stressors like eutrophication and climate change.

MEDSEAPLAN is funded in the frame of the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership (SBEP) which constitutes a Horizon Europe co-funded Partnership of at present 60 Partner institutions in 25 countries and the European Commission with the overall aim to pool research and innovation investments and align national programs at pan-European scale.
