Developing Optimal and Open Research Support for the Black Sea

DOORS

Project timeline
Start:
June 2021
Duration:
48 months
End:
May 2025
General Information
The overall objective of DOORS is to make the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda for the Black Sea operational, support the successful implementation of Blue Growth and contribute to a healthy, productive and resilient Black Sea. The project will harmonize research and provide the infrastructure to better understand the Black Sea, particular ecosystem characteristics, develop the framework to support Blue Growth and early development of startups, and provide evidence to inform policy and behavioral change. To reach its ambitious objectives, the project consortium will work closely with stakeholders from the start to develop an open research system and establish a framework to support a continuous stakeholder dialogue.
DOORS will implement three Work Programmes: (1) a System of Systems to harmonise approaches and provide an accessible data repository, (2) a Blue Growth Accelerator to support enterprises, and (3) Knowledge Transfer and Training to share best practice and build capacity. Such Work Programmes will: (i) Engage stakeholders through communication, dissemination and training activities to raise awareness, build capacity and foster a stronger Black Sea identity; (ii) harmonise data collation, analysis and access to optimize data use in decision and policy making; (iii) strengthen the Black Sea scientific network through new collaborations, and bridge the gap between science and policy; and (iv) provide a range of products to support Black Sea innovation and enterprises.
Hereon-KCN will contribute to two work packages with expertise on harmonization of methods and observations on benthic habitats, and will lead a task on "Assess regulatory ecosystem service capacity and the state of recovery of selected unique shelf seafloor habitats of the Black Sea". Hereon-KSD will be mainly involved in the modelling activity of the river-coast-ocean continuum. The focus is to assess, predict and inform about impacts of climate activity and pollution in the Black Sea based on modelling activities.
