COPERNICUS Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) - Ocean Colour Thematic Assembly Centre

General Information

The aim of the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) is to deliver generic and systematic reference information on the physical state and dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems for the Global Ocean and the European regional seas on a regular basis. CMEMS is based on an architecture of seven distributed Monitoring and Forecasting Centres (MFCs) covering the Global Ocean and the European Regional Seas, supported by four Thematic Assembly Centres (TACs). Among the latter is Ocean Colour Thematic Assembly Centre (OC TAC), which provides worldwide global, pan-European and regional ocean colour products covering 7 defined CMEMS regions (e.g. Baltic Sea). Besides operational tasks OC TAC takes care of system evolution, e.g. by implementing improved, state-of-the-art algorithms.

The task of Hereon is the development of the 'Regional Algorithm for the Baltic Sea', which was identified as a specialised task of high interest for Europe. The Baltic Sea is, from an optical point of view, a challenging site. Its highly absorbing waters are mainly associated with the presence of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) which makes it hard to detect and quantify precisely the influence of absorbing phytoplankton by chlorophyll concentration in remote sensing data. The Baltic Sea is in addition characterised by occasional massive surface blooms of cyanobacteria. Special algorithms are necessary to gain satisfying results and are still the subject of research. Within this task the current best algorithms for atmospheric correction and in-water algorithms adapted to Baltic Sea specific optical models are implemented.
