The special award "nanotechnologies" went to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mady Elbahri of the Faculty of Engineering, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht. With his employees Elbahri has developed new, ultra-thin layers that can be used as anti reflectors, electrical conductors or transparent layers. They are composed of metal nanoparticles such as gold, which is embedded in, for example, silicon dioxide. These layers can be used in photovoltaics. Initial computer simulations can expect a significantly better energy efficiency.

This year the contest was organized by the CAU and the Business Development and Technology Transfer Corporation of Schleswig Holstein (WTSH). They were looking for fresh, innovative and trend-setting ideas for products, services or processes that can be implemented successfully on the market. A 60-member expert jury, with representatives from industry, research and funding institutions, rated the uniqueness, customer benefits, the market potential of the ideas and the significance for Schleswig-Holstein.
