Pushing the safety of degradable magnesium implants even further

It has been an exciting week for the scientists: For the first time, the students who will do their PhD under the European MSCA ‘MgSafe’ have met with all the partners involved. These include representatives of thirteen institutions including 5 industrial partners, the supervisors of the doctoral students as well as the coordinators of the project. Two partners of MgSafe are located in Oslo: the Oslo Metropolitan University and the University of Oslo.

"The on-boarding meeting went very well. For the first time, the various participants were able to exchange ideas in person and we had very fruitful discussions. This is how such a large and international project flourishes", says Prof. Dr. Regine Willumeit-Römer, coordinator of the project and head of the division Metallic Biomaterials, Institute of Materials Research, at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht.

The research to be tackled in this project is huge: Various imaging methods such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography (CT), ultrasound (US) and photoacoustics (USPA) are to be used and optimised to investigate the behaviour of biodegradable magnesium implants.
