Validation/VERIfication and intercomparison of forecast and reanalysis BLUE products

VERIBLUE

Project timeline
Start:
September 2023
Duration:
16 months
End:
December 2024
General Information
Two partners from Germany, Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH) and Helmholtz-Zentrum hereon GmbH (Hereon), will perform a validation, verification and an intercomparison of forecast and reanalysis products available for the North West Shelf region with a special focus on the North Sea for blue products within the period June 2023 until December 2024. Both partners having decades of experience in the operation of hydrodynamic and wave models and the evaluation of model results, especially in the North Sea region, and both members in the EuroGOOS North West European Shelf Operational Oceanographic System (NOOS) form this consortium. In addition, BSH has national obligations within operational oceanography and are skilled for operational tasks in this region. Both institutes, but especially Hereon, are qualified for oceanographic research and development, also with a special focus on the North Sea region, which could be shown by the publication of several scientific papers within the last years. Within the current Copernicus phase, both institutes are involved in MFC consortiums and among other things perform product quality tasks.
BSH acts as Product Quality Coordinator of the Baltic monitoring forecasting centre (BAL MFC) and is therefore responsible for the quality control of the BAL MFC products. In this context BSH is part of the CMEMS Product Quality group, develops statistical metrics for biogeochemical and physical NRT and MYP products and prepares product quality documents both for forecast (NRT) and reanalysis-products (MYP) on a regular basis. In addition BSH is co-involved in the product quality group of the current North West shelf monitoring forecast centre (NWS MFC) and is operating a Multi-Model Ensemble both for the Baltic and for the North Sea resp. North-West-Shelf region. Hereon is part of the Black Sea monitoring forecast centre (BS MFC) consortium and operates as the production unit for the Black Sea wave product. In this context, Hereon produces all product quality documents related to waves.
