The Sturmflutmonitor is an online tool that uses daily data collected by the relevant authorities and provided on PEGELONLINE. This data includes tide measurements from the German North and Baltic Sea coasts. The Sturmflutmonitor evaluates these measurements daily and relates them to long-term storm surge statistics. It compares current storm surges with the storm surge events of the past decades. It is a near-real time assessment of storm surges in the context of long-term climate variability and anthropogenic climate change.
The tool shows whether current storm surges and the course of the current season are exceptional or whether similar water levels have occurred before¹². It also compares the number of storm surges during the current season with previous years.
