The Storm Monitor is an online information service that evaluates storm events on a daily basis for selected regions in Northern Germany. It was developed to convey knowledge about changing storm activity and to classify recent events in a timely manner with a view to historical fluctuations and climate change. The basis for calculating storm activity over the last 70 years is the determination of the so-called geostrophic wind at several kilometers altitude based on air pressure measurements.
The Storm Monitor provides access to statistics and graphics for various regions of Northern Germany. The Storm Monitor is aimed at the interested public, teaching and research, media, as well as stakeholders such as insurance companies, the energy industry, and federal or state bodies for the environment or preventive disaster protection.
