The department Ecosystem Modeling studies new hypotheses on key processes of the human-driven transformation of marine ecosystems. The department Hydrodynamics and Data Assimilation develops numerical models for the ocean, waves and estuaries using modern technologies for data analysis and assimilation.
The collaborative Helmholtz research project “Effect of anthropogenic modifications and climate change on greenhouse gas emissions along the river-ocean continuum” (AGRIO) examines production of greenhouse gases (GHGs) carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. Field observations and numerical models of the Elbe–North Sea system will help us understand the impacts of human action on GHG dynamics and develop strategies to mitigate emissions, balancing ecological conservation with human development.
For our interdisciplinary and inter-institutional team we seek a Postdoctoral researcher (24 months, 100%) in coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical (BGC) modeling, starting as early as possible.
Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.
In principle, the full time position (39 h/week) is also sharable.
Your tasks
- apply and validate the hydrodynamic model SCHISM in an estuary context
- adding pathways for methane and nitrous oxide to existing pelagic and benthic BGC models (e.g. FABM/OMexDia)
- conduct experiments with the coupled system to explain observed responses to climate change and direct anthropogenic stressors and to unravel future responses
- publish joint studies on key mechanisms controlling BGC fluxes and GHG emissions in tidal systems
Content-related enquiries regarding this position can be directed to Dr. Carsten Lemmen (carsten.lemmen@hereon.de).
