Meine Forschung basiert auf der Idee, dass wir die Dynamik komplexer Umweltsysteme wie den Küstenökosystemen über relativ einfache Gesetzmäßigkeiten verstehen können. Die Identifizierung solcher Gesetzmäßigkeiten mithilfe großer Datensätze und neu entwickelter Modellierungsverfahren bestimmt bis heute meine Arbeiten. Mit deren Anwendung, häufig in realitätsnahen, gekoppelten physikalisch-biologische Simulationen, versuchen mein Team und ich, die Antwort von marinen, küstennahen Ökosystemen auf mannigfache Veränderungen durch menschliche Nutzungen und Klima abzuschätzen.
Meine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf
• biologischer Anpassung und deren quantitativer Beschreibung (über „traits“ bzw. „Eigenschaften“)
• planktischen Lebewesen als Basis des marinen Nahrungsnetzes
• dem Zusammenwirken der Ökologie, Biogeochemie und Physik am Meeresboden
• der Modellierung sozialer Prozesse und von Mensch-Umwelt Wechselwirkung
