The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), a scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, located in Hamburg, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position, starting November 2024 in the EU project “FOCAL - Efficient Exploration of climate data locally”. The position is limited to 31.10.2027. The place of employment is Hamburg.

The EU project FOCAL seeks to advance our understanding of complex systems that govern our planet and helps us develop more effective solutions for mitigating the impacts of climate change. FOCAL will create a platform that combines intelligent workflow management with the capacities of high-performance computing infrastructures. The platform includes data and metadata management dynamically linked to AI development routines. This environment enables fast and efficient training and validation of innovative AI and statistical methods that shall provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of climate change on a local scale. GERICS leads the Co-development process with urban planners to create accessible and user-friendly web/cloud-apps for their specific climate impact assessment challenges.

Your tasks

  • scientific lead and coordination of the FOCAL Urban Pilot #1 for localized climate model data and efficient workflows for climate-resilient urban development
  • research of region-city-climate categories in collaboration with partners in the FOCAL project
  • development of climate indicators and research of AI-based downscaling methods for localizing climate data and climate change information for cities
  • development of a ‘City Climate Fact Sheet Generator’ in collaboration with the project partners
  • co-creation, testing, evaluation, documentation and provision of ready-to-use workflows and interactive applications (web/cloud apps) for the FOCAL platform
  • close collaboration with project partners and conduct workshops with partners and urban stakeholders
  • collaboration with international networks such as the Open Geospatial Consortium
  • publication of research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Your profile

  • Master/Diploma (univ.) and doctoral degree in meteorology, mathematics, physics, geography, earth system sciences or related disciplines of natural and earth sciences
  • many years of experience in regional climate modelling up to the convection permitting scale as well as the analysis and interpretation of climate model data and other meteorological data
  • profound experience in the development of climate data workflows and products in accordance with the ‘FAIR’ criteria and the provision of climate services
  • very good knowledge of statistical methods for analyzing projected climate change and meteorological extremes as well as mathematical methods for artificial intelligence
  • extensive experience of working in national and international research projects and networks such as EU projects and EURO-CORDEX
  • profound experiences using python for geoscientific applications (e.g., xarray, pandas, numpy) in a Linux/Unix/HPC environment
  • experience in processing of climate data in an HPC environment (familiarity with data formats and meta data conventions, e.g., NetCDF, CF conventions)
  • skills in collaborative software development practices using version control (git)
  • knowledge of working with geographic information systems (GIS)
  • willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team and international environment
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • German language skills are an advantage
  • longstanding experience in publishing peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals
