Institute of Photoelectrochemistry

The Institute of Photoelectrochemistry pursues research on the “artificial leaf”. This is a concept based on natural photosynthesis for energy-efficient and sustainable production of hydrogen as an energy carrier. Further reaction of hydrogen with carbon dioxide or nitrogen to form synthetic “green” hydrocarbons or ammonia is also possible in the artificial leaf. To achieve the most efficient interaction with light, we develop specifically adapted surface coatings and surface structures. The institute possesses unique instruments for high-resolution experiments that are combined with powerful digital simulation tools. In this way, we strive for a comprehensive understanding of solar-based reactions that can contribute to the protection of our environment and to the establishment of a sustainable energy supply.
