Experimental Materials Mechanics

The “Experimental Materials Mechanics” department researches materials for use in lightweight engineering and in biological environments as well as for innovative applications in the energy sector. The experimental methods are supported through computer simulations to shed light on the relationships between structure and properties on the micro and nanoscales. We make significant contributions to digitization using new methods for data analysis. Detailed micromechanical and microstructural measurement series provide important fundamental data for producing digital twins. The data provided—for example, high-resolution 3D structural information from nanotomography—forms the basis for validating these computer models in terms of their significance and how realistic they are.
