The environmental state of the coastal sea, adaptation to climate change and alternatives to conventional fuels – the current issue delves into important topics concerning the future. The scientists have developed a hydrogen storage tank that could be used in the future to power series vehicles: with fuel cell and electric motor. They are also researching the climate-neutral production of hydrogen using solar cells. Three materials researchers tell us in an interview about their work.

How can wastewater be cleaned more efficiently? Within the framework of a large project, a PhD student researches optimised hollow fibre membranes that could possibly be used in treatment plants soon.

Also included in this issue: an interview about a project that produced an aluminium alloy as strong as steel.

Come along on a measurement campaign on the Baltic Sea! Our “Photo Feature” shows you how coastal researchers seek out pollutants in water and sediments and then analyse their findings.

We’ll also introduce you to an institute director and a scientist in the field of materials research who are looking into lightweight materials and nanoporous gold.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue and we look forward to getting your feedback!
