Our magazine in2science - People with Ideas allows scientists to have their say. What moves them? Why are they working in this field of research?

Environmental Protection

Many of these topics are driven by the belief in the importance of environmental protection, such as the task of producing hydrogen in a climate-neutral way. For example, a department at the HZG is working on reproducing photosynthesis, the artificial leaf. The aim is to produce hydrogen as an energy source through the energy supplied by light. We explain how this can work in the photo story and an info graphic.

Climate Research

Climate research is indispensable when it comes to environmental protection. The Institute for Coastal Research and the Climate Service Center Germany are organised within the Hamburg Climate Research Cluster. In the magazine, two participating researchers and the spokesperson for the cluster report on their work at CLICCS.

Portraits

In his portrait, Scientific Director of the HZG, Professor Wolfgang Kaysser, looks to the future. Materials researcher Dr Erica Lilleodden, on the other hand, prefers to tell stories — preferably ones associated with materials and nanoscale views.

Artificial Intelligence in Materials Research

Neural networks and self-learning programmes are becoming ever more important in research. Materials scientists at the HZG provide insights into adaptive algorithms and deep learning programmes that are used, for example, to create intelligent surfaces.

Material with a Plan

A PhD student in materials research has further developed an innovative process to investigate how space debris can be avoided.

At the Magnesium Innovation Centre and in cooperation with the industry, plans for the use of magnesium are being made. You can read up on their progress in the magazine.
