New construction of the "Coriolis" (Ludwig Prandtl II)

Following extensive preliminary planning with a feasibility study in 2019, the new construction project was approved by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag at the end of 2020. Together with the Hamburg design office TECHNOLOG Services GmbH (TLS), the detailed planning of the research vessel was implemented.

Following the invitation to tender in 2022, the Hitzler shipyard in Lauenburg was awarded the construction of the "Ludwig Prandtl II". Coastal research, hydrogen technologies, membrane research as well as digitalization - all these research topics will be included in the construction. As a research platform, the ship thus covers a broad interdisciplinary spectrum and can be used in a variety of ways by Hereon and its partners for research and teaching.

Construction began with the start of steel cutting on January 19, 2023, the traditional keel laying was on March 23, 2023 and delivery will be in 2024. The new research vessel will be called "Coriolis". This name was selected in an internal naming competition among the Hereon staff. The name goes back to the mathematician and physicist Gaspard Gustave de Coriolis (1792-1843). He dealt in detail in studies with the Coriolis force, later named after him, which has a fundamental influence on the circulation of the atmosphere and the oceans and every movement on the spinning earth. "Ludwig Prandtl II" as the working title for the new research vessel will remain until its completion.
