Integrative and Comprehensive Understanding on Polar Environments

General Information

iCUPE targets to provide novel insights and observational data on global grand challenges with a polar focus. The work is motivated by the fact that the role of polar regions will increase in terms of megatrends such as globalization, new transport routes, demography and use of natural resources consequent effects of regional and transported pollutant concentrations. iCUPE utilizes an integrated approach combining in-situ observations, satellite remote sensing and multi-scale modelling to synthesize data from comprehensive long-term measurements, intensive campaigns and satellites, to relate the observed parameters to impacts, and to deliver data products, metrics and indicators to the stakeholders concerning the environmental status, availability and extraction of natural resources in the polar areas.
The iCUPE work consists of thematic state-of-the-art research and provision of novel data in atmospheric pollution, local sources and transboundary transport, characterization of arctic surfaces and their changes, assessment of concentrations and impacts of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants and their cycling, quantification of emissions from natural resource extraction and validation and optimization of satellite EO data streams.
Hereon’s key contribution is to the work package entitled “In-situ component for organic contaminants, mercury and other heavy metals”. iCUPE is funded in the frame of the Horizon 2020 ERANET ERA-PLANET (The European network for observing our changing planet).
