DRAGON in support of harmonizing European and Chinese marine monitoring for Environment and Security System

DRAGONESS

Project timeline
Start:
September 2007
Duration:
36 months
End:
August 2010
General Information
Capitalizing on the ongoing DRAGON project and the outcome of the EU FP6 MERSEA Strand-1 project the DRAGONESS SSA (Specific Support Action) aims to assess, advance and harmonize European and Chinese capacities in marine monitoring for environment and security. The primary objective of the DRAGONESS SSA is to make an inventory of Chinese and European capacities of marine monitoring for environment and security including Earth observation data, in order to harmonize methods in the frame of international programs such as GOOS and GMES and investigate the potential for establishing and harmonizing operational services contribution to GEOSS. In so doing DRAGONESS will take stock of existing information production and service deliveries in order to: identify service/data gaps and barriers; develop activities to disseminate and implement products and services derived or customized from current GMES development activities; study and identify the potential for current and foreseen sustainable European GMES services to be transferred and provide the building blocks for the EU contribution to Chinese marine GMES and hence GEOSS; consider transfer of Chinese marine GMES related experience for European coastal seas; stimulate scientific exchange in Earth Observation science and technology by bringing together investigators from Europe and China.
